Plaza Monumental de Toros de Pueblo Nuevo is a bullring in the city of San Cristóbal, in the Venezuelan state of Táchira.
The location of the arena is sportive and entertaining: this is the urban sector of Pueblo Nuevo which consists of gyms and stadiums, including the Pueblo Nuevo sports center, the San Cristóbal stadium and the J. J. Mora velodrome.
The arena construction began in 1965, and in January 1967, the building was opened. Its erection started on the initiative of some businessmen from Tacoma. One of them was the architect Eduardo Santos Castillo. He worked out the arena project and took part in its improvement from the very beginning.
Eminent cattle ranches were announced to participate in the inaugural corrida. Among the matadors were Antonio Chenel «Antoñete», Curro Girón, Paco Camino, Manuel Cano «El Pireo».
The tradition of holding corrida is still alive in Venezuela. Regular seasonal bullfights arouse high interest, becoming long-awaited events for citizens and residents of other regions. Matador meetings are usually held in series, with multi-day corrida festivals in January-February. The status of the festivals is international because it unites participants from Venezuela, Spain, and France.
Initially, the arena was designed to accommodate 23 thousand spectators, this number included 17 thousand seats. In 1997, the seating scheme was improved, which reduced the arena's capacity to 15,000 spectators. This optimization made it possible to use the arena not only for bullfighting but also for entertainment events.
In addition to a convenient platform for spectacular events, the arena has become one of the architectural dominants of San Cristóbal over the decades. Plaza Monumental is a special architectural ensemble located in the green foothills of the Cordillera de Merida chain, that surrounds the city from the west.
