Fair of The Sun (Feria del Sol) is an international festival held in the Venezuelan city of Mérida.

Every year, in February or March, the city is immersed in a festive mood: cultural events are combined with the Bullfighting carnival of America (Carnaval Taurino de America). This South American feria echoes the tradition of European carnivals and festivities, after which religious fasting and preparation for Easter begin.

Today, some of the festival's events have retained a religious basis, but most days of the fair are filled with secular content. The festival includes zootechnical exhibitions, concerts, costume parades, sports competitions, bullfights, and the election of the main lady of this multi-genre festival - the Queen of the Sun (La Reina Del Sol). The choice of the Queen is, in fact, a beauty voting competition: several participants seek to get the crown and the status of the "godmother" of an event important for the city and the entire state.

The main stage of the festival is Plaza de Toros de Mérida - a modern "Colosseum" that can accommodate up to 16 thousand spectators. The arena appeared in the 1960s. Mérida did not have its bullfighting tradition, unlike the neighboring regions of the country. Bullfights were popular in other Venezuelan cities: San Cristóbal, Barquisimeto, or Maracaibo. Then the initiative group proposed to build a platform for the show of bullfighters. Together with the implementation of this idea, Merida has its bullfighting calendar and festival, which is considered the most colorful in the country.

The first festival was held in 1969: since then, Feria del Sol has become one of the most important cultural fairs in Venezuela. The Feria in Mérida is popular within its own country and is considered significant in other countries with a bullfighting tradition.
