To bask in the warm rays of the sun on the Caribbean coast or to conquer the mountain peaks of the famous Andes - all travelers to Venezuela are troubled by this choice. However, it will be an unforgivable mistake for everyone to visit this small country of Latin America and not to see the highest waterfall in the world.
The famous Angel Falls is on the territory of Canaima National Park, which is located in the state of Bolivar. Every morning, planes and helicopters leave for the park from its capital, Ciudad Bolivar, which is why the city got its second name, the Canaima Gate. You will not be able to fly to the waterfall as the fog is too dense. It`s only possible to go down the river in a canoe until one of the amazing creations of nature will rise to view.
Angel falls first became known in 1910, when it was discovered by the Venezuelan explorer and traveler Ernesto Sánchez La Cruz. However, such a striking event remained unknown to the general public, until in 1937 the American pilot James Crawford Angel landed a plane next to it. The plane lay there for 33 years before being transferred to the airport of Ciudad Bolivar, where it can be seen today.
The waterfall was named Angel in honor of James Crawford Angel. Officially, its height is 979 meters, but in fact, it exceeds 1000 meters, which is almost 20 times more than the height of the famous Niagara Falls. Its power depends on the season and the amount of precipitation. During a drought, a small lagoon forms at its foot. Those lucky who have visited the waterfall at this time can swim in a small pool created by nature itself. Fans of extreme recreation can also find something to do: for example, to take an unforgettable hang-glider flight from the top of the waterfall.
