One of the largest cultural objects in Caracas is the National Art Gallery (Galería de Arte Nacional; GAN). It welcomes connoisseurs of high art in the Plaza Morelos area.

The gallery started its work in 1976 by combining samples of Venezuelan art. The collections are housed in a neoclassical building designed in 1935 by Carlos Raul Villanueva, one of the most famous Venezuelan architects. The building was intended directly for the Fine Art Museum, operating in Caracas since 1917. In the current building in Los Caobos Park, the museum has worked since 1938.

One of the oldest parks in Caracas has become a kind of the heart of the cultural quarter of the Venezuelan capital: in addition to the National Art Gallery, there are the Science Museum (Ciencias de Caracas), the National Experimental University of the Arts (Universidad Nacional Experimental de las Artes), the Teresa Carreño Theatre (Teatro Teresa Carreño).

The gallery's collections combine works of Venezuelan artists for more than 5 centuries: from the pre-colonial era, the era of Simon Bolivar to artworks of our time.

The inner  courtyard of the museum is decorated with stone and marble and features a romantic, quiet pond surrounded by willows. The facade of the building with porticos reflects a mixed architectural style; cornices and columns are elements of the neoclassical style. Sculptural reliefs decorate the lower part of the museum wall. Apart from the halls, you can also give a look in the terrace on the top floor: you can enjoy a picturesque view of the city and Los Caobos Park.

The gallery's valuable collections help to understand the creative processes in Venezuelan art. On the one hand, there are local petroglyphs, historical canvases, sets of drawings by the French impressionist Camille Pissarro made during his stay in Venezuela in the middle of the XIX century; a significant group of works by one of the largest Venezuelan artists of the XX century, Armando Reverón. On the other hand, the gallery also features contemporary artworks that expand the boundaries of traditional disciplines of fine art. In addition to the variety of works on display, the gallery has one of the largest art repositories in the country.
