The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral (La Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Carmen), or simply Barquisimeto Cathedral, is a Catholic church, that is attractive for its unusual architectural appearance. The building is located Avenida Venezuela between Avenida Simón Rodríguez and Calle 30.

Futuristic and unusual, the temple looks more like a winter garden dome or a model of a spaceship than a religious structure.

The cathedral was completed in 1968: this era gave the world a lot of buildings with bold and innovative design. It is believed that this was a completely new design option for its time. Despite its already significant history, it is one of the most modern cathedrals in Latin America. Designed by Jan Berkman: this was the architect's first major project.

The temple is covered with a parabolic concrete roof with two wings connected by a central tower; the high altar is located in the center of the building. The exterior shape of the building is an inverted flower, reimagining the four naves in a vision of contemporary architectural art. The cathedral's ceiling consists of acrylic panels supported by a network of steel wires.

In contrast to the traditionally elongated shape of cathedrals, in this one, the altar is seen from a semicircular line, behind which are the benches for the parishioners.

Another striking feature is that the ceiling of the building is transparent: this abundantly fills the temple with light. There are many stained-glass windows in the cathedral, donated by various well-known people and companies of the city.

The temple was consecrated in honor of Our Lady of Carmel, also the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, patroness of the Carmelites. She is the patron of the army and drivers in Venezuela. Many churches and monasteries have been erected around the world in her honor; on the South American continent, Our Lady of Carmel is considered the patroness of the state of Chile.

The cathedral is open only for public visits (usually at 6:00 pm on weekdays, with an increased frequency of services on Sunday).
