You can get bright emotions and unforgettable experience not only from gorgeous beaches and exotic cocktails, but also from those corners of the Earth where restaurants and hotels have never existed, and the average air temperature rarely rises above zero. These are the places where there is no local flora, severe gusty winds blow hard, and bird colonies and pods of whales are considered the main attraction.

On the island of South Georgia there are almost no permanent residents, as well as hospitals or shops, but this fact doesn’t stop bold travelers from sailing up to its shore in search of new amazing discoveries. This island definitely can amaze. While there are no elementary blessings of modern civilization, you can still find an abandoned whaling factory whose territory now hosts the Museum of South Georgia. The building of the early 20th century, an old factory and two whale hunting vessels lifted from the sea bottom surrounded by picturesque fjords and glaciers, are a part of a big museum complex of the first whaling factory in the Antarctic located in a port city Grytviken.

The museum was opened in 1992, but the whaling factory had stopped functioning a long time before and had been closed in 1964. Until that moment, the factory administrator's family had been living there, and today it’s the most popular place among all the travelers arriving here. The museum exhibition describes all the history of Antarctic, starting from the day of its discovery, numerous explorations of its local landscapes and fauna representatives, development of the whale hunting industry, and the events of the Falkland war in 1982. The central place belongs to the bronze bust of a famous polar explorer Duncan Carse, thanks to whom the island of South Georgia was marked on the world map.

A married couple, Tim and Pauline Carr, famous travelers and explorers had been curators of the museum for a long time. Nowadays, workers of Grytviken research station deal with the maintenance of the museum and organizing touristic excursions.
