Talking about Peruvian landmarks, even experienced travelers name only the well-known ancient Incas city of Machu Pichu, numerous ruins of ancient temples and historical museums with vast collections of artifacts from Pre-Columbian civilizations. Nobody mentions the Spanish colonial period and the magnificent historical and cultural landmarks spread out on Peruvian streets.

The Torre Tagle Palace built in 1735 in the heart of modern Lima is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture and the main landmark of the capital. Marquis de Torre Tagle, occupying the position of Treasurer of the Spanish Royal fleet, created this building, an admirable example of the Seville Baroque.

The asymmetric facade of the building whose first floor clad in stone, and the second is covered with colorful plaster looks bright but harmonious. It was typical of palace architecture in Spain at that time. Although the general style can be determined as classical Baroque, there are also some features of Mudéjar art, popular in Andalucia. Besides, most building materials were brought also from Spain. Majestic carved columns and a thin delicate portico decorated with the Torre Tagle’s family crest, complement spacious balconies made of bloodwood, just like in palaces of European lords. With time using carved wooden balconies became a traditional architectural feature for the Peruvian colonial period.

The Torre Tagle palace is rather small, it consists of only 14 rooms, a kitchen, and a spacious dining room, a beautiful chapel decorated with precious metals and gems. But the elegant gorgeous saloon in Mavritan style with the ceiling clad in decorative tiles and several huge mirrors is considered the real treasure of the palace. You can also see the portraits of Marquis Torre Tagle and his beloved wife, and his carriage that occupies one of his rooms.
