Léopold Héder Square (Place Léopold-Héder) is a historical place in the northwestern part of Cayenne. Sometimes it is called in the old way - Place de Grenoble. The modern name was given in 1980 in honor of Léopold Héder, the mayor and senator of Cayenne.

It is the old central district of the capital, where the city's iconic attractions are concentrated. The square is decorated with historic anchors and the Montravel fountain, named after the Governor of Guiana, Louis-Marie-François Tardy de Montravel. The square is surrounded by the buildings of the Post Office and the Prefecture (built by the Jesuits in the XVIII century) with an elegant colonnade, which was ordered to be added to the facade in 1925 under the leadership of Marc Émile Charles Jean Chanel, the Governor of Guiana.

The historical center around Léopold Héder Square is quite compact: the main attractions are located nearby. You can walk to the city's museums: the Museum of Guyanese Cultures, the Felix Eboue Museum and the Musée départemental Alexandre Franconie. There is another recognizable urban space nearby - Des Palmistes Square with cafes and restaurants. The popular walking area got its name from the many tall palm trees. There is also a monument to Felix Ebouet, the first French black colonial administrator and the hero of the Resistance movement of the 1940s.

The Alexandre Franconi Museum (Musée départemental Alexandre Franconie) is located just a few steps from Léopold Héder Square on the way to Des Palmistes Square. This museum of the department of French Guiana was founded on October 15, 1901 (the day of the city of Cayenne). It was named after the humanist Alexandre Franconi, who provided many exhibits for the collection. All of the exhibitions are located in the Franconi house, built in 1824-1842. The building itself is of historical value. The museum stands are dedicated to the local history, ethnology, archeology, and the art of the region. Among the exhibits are paintings, craft tools, herbariums. Each of the halls illustrates a specific historical period in the life of Guiana. Special attention is paid to the colonial life of the XIX century.
