The warm waters of the Caribbean Sea from one side, from another – the ice peaks of Sierra Nevada. Hidden between the two, the flourishing port city of Santa Marta is a resort destination favored by all Colombians. Enormous cruise ships and snow-white yachts come to its shores every day, and hundreds of tourists wander leisurely in its old paved alleys, exploring the monuments of colonial architecture. Others are attracted by kilometers of sandy beaches and the dazzling underwater world of the Caribbean Sea. This place provides an opportunity to practice all watersports. Besides, coral gardens and deep-sea caves can stun even experienced divers with their beauty.
This fascinating dreamlike world is hidden in the near-shore waters of Santa Marta. However, there is no need to put on a diving suit and dive those dangerous depths of the sea. It is enough to buy a ticket to the big local aquarium to see all the inhabitants of Colombia’s sea kingdom. Its opening took place in 1999, and since then, the Marine World Aquarium has become a popular entertainment destination for the locals and the guests of the city. Its massive collections of flora and fauna of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean will please not only children but also their parents. That is why the Santa Marta Aquarium is considered the perfect place to spend time with family and children of all ages.
The Marine World Aquarium is the biggest in South America. Its area is subdivided into three sections. First, the visitors get acquainted with the pictures of the inhabitants of the sea depths and geographical maps, learn about the pollution level and ways of cleaning up seas and oceans, as well as measures related to the protection and saving of marine animals. The second section hosts more than 25 panoramic aquariums where you can see about 300 types of sea fauna species: seahorses and starfish, giant tarpons and turtles, weird-looking octopuses, and dozens of brightly colored fish. The third section is occupied by a huge pool filled with the most dangerous predators on Earth – sharks. Here, you can also see giant manta rays and enjoy their famous dance.
