To watch or not to watch «Star Wars»? Well, the answer may be negative. But when you have an opportunity to visit the Park Of The Lights or Parque de las Luces in Medellín, cast aside any doubts. The alley of the «Jedi» swords is a must-see for any self-respecting tourist coming to Colombia, and, especially, to Medellín.
The park appeared here fifteen years ago in place of the most criminal and poor districts of the city. At the end of the 19th century, the square, where the park is now, was the first thing that a tourist, coming by train, saw. There was also a market. Merchants were selling, loading, and unloading fruit and vegetables from morning till evening. A century later, the railway went bankrupt, and the authorities decided to brighten the looks of Medellín by lighting up this realm of darkness, criminality, and poverty. This is the story of how this park appeared, where instead of green trees with widespread crown and fragrant flowers, there are metal and concrete: to be precise, 300 light poles from these materials. Each of the light poles is 24 meters high. Each of them lights the square depending on the moon phase. There are also special light reflectors installed in the square. Thanks to them, the park looks even more surrealistic.
To see the square in all its beauty, it is recommended to come here after dusk. When the light swords ignite with neon light, the place looks absolutely anew. It seems that you are transferred to the Jedi world. That is the right place for «cosmic» photos. By taking a photo from the worm’s-eye view, you will capture illuminated skyscrapers reaching out to the sky. You can try catching the alley from a side-view for a general shot. The park really looks like a fantastic forest.
But during the day, it is not empty at all: it hosts fairs, small festivals, and even marathons. There are chairs and stone benches between the poles so that you can enjoy a break.
