There is a place in Colombia that can easily claim the status of one of the Wonders of the World. It is impossible to forget the Chikamocha Canyon. It is situated near the city of Bucaramanga and is amazingly impressive.
You go here just to look at nature, and suddenly become a witness of real natural magic when you see the river that cuts its way through the giant mountains. The canyon is considered to be the second-longest and largest in the world after the Grand Canyon in America. It's really enormous!
The Chikamocha Canyon covers an area of 180 thousand hectares. Its depth is two thousand meters.
Just imagine. Once upon a time, there was a huge lake in this place. According to numerous studies, 46 million years ago the entire area of the Chicamocha canyon was covered with water. Remains of ancient fish, reptiles, and other organisms are still found in the local caves. It is difficult to say what happened next, but when the water left – this beautiful ravine appeared on the surface.
Standing at the top, you look down to the bottom of the canyon. And you see that life is in full swing there. The flora and fauna of the Chikamocha Canyon are very diverse. There are iguanas, possums, anteaters, a variety of monkeys, partridges, woodpeckers. A rare, disappearing pot-bellied tree is also growing. It is actively used for construction.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to see all this richness up close. You can view the canyon only from above or through the glass of the cabin on the ropeway. If the canyon is a big attraction, the cabin is a small one, as it allows you to be almost inside all this beauty.
It is true that you can't go down to the bottom of the ravine, but that's for your best. After all, the height allows you to see more beauty. The Chikamocha Canyon is a must-see place for sure. It is something that will turn all your ideas about the power of nature, that will fill you with incredible emotions, energy and will become the brightest point on the map of your travels.
