Mount Santa Lucia, located in the heart of the capital of Chile, is one of the main attractions of the city and a favorite holiday destination for locals. This is a picturesque 630-meter hill with an ancient castle, a picturesque well-kept park, beautiful terraces and fountains, and a stunning observation deck at the top. What is the peculiarity of this place and why it attracts citizens and tourists for almost five hundred years?
It is worth starting with the fact that mount Santa Lucia is perhaps the main historical place of Santiago. In the year of the city's foundation, the Spanish Conquistador and first Governor of Chile, Pedro de Valdivia, climbed to the top of the mountain to see the new lands and landscapes at the foot of the Andes. The magnificent picture of nature that the future founding father of the country saw inspired him to give the order to lay a city here. At the same time, mount Santa Lucia received its name a year before this significant event, when a battle between indigenous tribes and Spanish colonizers took place on its territory. Given the further development, it is not difficult to guess who won this battle.
To climb to the top of Santa Lucia, you will have to overcome a hundred steps. Of course, you can use the funicular, but then you will deprive yourself of a delightful walk among the many planted trees, shrubs, and flower beds. The hike is worth it: believe me, while sitting in the cab, it’s impossible to see such an incredible view.
The main part of the park begins closer to the peak of the mountain. There are additional paths and benches where visitors can relax under the thorny tree crowns and enjoy the surrounding nature. Also, there are musical fountains in the park – a favorite attraction of many tourists, and small buildings – references to the ancient buildings of the city. Amid all this atmospheric entourage, there is a monument to the founder of the city and country, Pedro de Valdivia, who proudly observes his heritage.
There are two viewing platforms on Santa Lucia. One is located on a ledge of the mountain, and the other – on the roof of a decorative castle. Choose any of them and enjoy the spectacular views.
