Once in Chillán, it is worth visiting the very picturesque craft fair (Feria Artesanal de Chillán). This is a place for those who like souvenirs in a folk style: folk crafts and traditional crafts, simple and unusual handicrafts.
Craft stalls are located in the city market of Feria de la Plaza Sargento Aldea, in the block between Maipón, 5 de Abril, Isabel Riquelme, and Roble.
This is one of the most authentic places in Chile: due to the variety of crafts presented, the spaciousness trading environment, so different from modern shopping centers or souvenir shops in tourist spots. At the fair, you can find a variety of wicker products, traditional blankets, knitted clothes, household utensils, toys, musical instruments, jewelry, leather goods, stone, and wood carvings. Besides, handicrafts presented in this market are of good quality.
In addition to the colorful craft fair, you can continue exploring the local life by walking along the other rows of the market. This place is interesting for tourists who want to see the ordinary life of Chileans. Fruits and vegetables, seasonings, clothing, home furnishings, and ceramics are sold near handicrafts typical of the Región de Ñuble region and the Biobío region.
The market occupies a large area in the center of Chillán. And trade stalls offer cultural objects from both Chile and other Latin American countries. In general, this urban market, which has undergone reconstruction, is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the country with a rich selection of various products.
Like most traditional markets, the market on Plaza Sargento Aldea offers not only shopping opportunities but also the opportunity for gastronomic tastings! There are small pavilions where you can try typical local cuisine, and, of course, see (and try if you are a fan of meat dishes) a huge selection of longanis, the local "Queen". It is a long sausage most often used for the barbecue or the choripan sandwiches (bread with chorizo).
