One of the most interesting museums in Brazil and a popular tourist destination in Teresina is the Piauí Museum (Museu do Piauí)- a huge collection of documents, maps, books, works of art, literature, and household items. It is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the history of Brazil in the most accessible and interesting way.
The building of the Piauí Museum is one of the architectural monuments. Unfortunately, it has not been restored for a long time. Therefore, it may seem that the museum is also in a deplorable state. But this is not true. Inside everything is much more interesting than outside!
The museum was opened in 1934. Then it was located on the territory of the State Archive. All historical, cultural, and artistic documents that required cataloging and identification were transferred to the museum.
Gradually, the collection of exhibits expanded: they found paintings were brought to the State Archives building, art objects purchased from collectors, and patrons donated their unique relics. Gradually, the Piauí Museum grew to a real museum. So it required its own building.
In 1980, the Piauí Museum was opened in a new building - in an old mansion almost in the center of the city. Currently, 15 halls are open there. The most interesting of them are devoted to folk art, sacred art, heraldry and numismatics, the history of the old and new Republic. In total, the museum features more than 7,000 exhibits devoted to the history of Brazil from the 19th century to the present. Conveniently, the entire collection is divided into themes. So you do not have to see everything in one day. You can purposefully study hall after hall.
It is also worth relaxing and making sense of the information received in the beautiful courtyard, which perfectly conveys the flavor of the Brazilian villas of the colonization era.
