In the center of Teresina, you can see a beautiful snow-white palace that resembles a Greek temple in its architecture. This is the Karnak Palace (Palacio Karnak) - one of the most popular attractions in the city.
There is still no reliable data on when the Karnak Palace was built. It is only known that by the second half of the 19th century this building already existed in the same form as it is now. Then there was no beautiful park around it. Moreover, the condition of the building required extensive repairs.
One of the first owners of this house was the Governor of Piauí - Gabriel Luis Ferreira. But since it took a lot of money to maintain the old mansion, he decided to sell it to a wealthier family of Baron Branco. This family used this beautiful house as an urban residence for more than 20 years. They even built an agricultural farm around it. Eventually, they moved to more modern apartments and sold the Karnak Palace to the city government for almost nothing. So the Government Palace has been located there since 1926: receptions, official meetings, and special events are held there.
The Karnak Palace was completely renovated in 1972. The architects preserved the original appearance of the palace. Unfortunately, the bas-relief inscription Palácio de Karnak, located above the main entrance, was lost due to restoration work. The old coat of arms of the city was also removed.
However, during the reconstruction of the complex, the garden around it was expanded. Some landscape elements were added and the pedestrian paths were ordered. Besides, special areas were designed. They are additionally decorated for holidays: beautiful light installations appear around the Karnak Palace. And the palace is illuminated in the evenings by elegant colored lamps.
This is not the only decoration of the palace during the holidays. On festive days, concerts by the symphony orchestra are held near the main entrance. Everyone can listen to musicians for free. The colorful lighting reflected in the pond and the music create an unforgettable atmosphere.
