215 steps on a 125-meter stretch - this is a brief description of one of the main attractions of the huge Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. The creation of the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón officially has the status of a city street. It took tens of years and thousands of pieces of colored tiles donated by tourists from all over the world to create it.
The history of this world masterpiece began in 1990 with the usual desire of a person for comfort and beauty. His name was Jorge Selarón. He was an artist and a ceramist. One day he decided to patch up the steps of the local staircase. The neighbors taunted him. But he was so caught up in the process that he couldn't stop until he had finished decorating the entire staircase. The creation of such an unusual industrial object became the meaning of the artist’s life. He spent all his money on it and even sold other works to continue the transformation of the stairs step by step. Later, his creation became known outside the city, and then the country. People began to bring and send him tiles from all over the world. So the ordinary staircase became the property of the whole world. This continued until the master's death: the burnt body of Jorge Selarón was found on the steps in 2013.
The staircase of Selarón is considered the most famous creation of the artist, which he created as a sign of respect for the Brazilian people. This is evidenced by the inscription "Escadaria Selaron Rio de Janeiro" at the very beginning of the stairs. The rest of his work was revealed to the world after it. For example, 25,000 copies of one of his paintings with an African woman in an interesting position were sold only after Jorge Selarón became famous for his staircase.
Today it is the most visited place in Rio de Janeiro. They shoot music videos and films, make appointments, and arrange dates there.
