Most of the population of the Brazilian state of Acre was illiterate and lived in rural areas. All buildings were made of wood. And people did not know about such public places as museums, exhibitions, and galleries. Everything changed with the rise to power of the politician Hugo Ribeiro Carneiro. He took the post of governor of Acre and launched a large-scale construction in its capital, Rio Branco. On the second anniversary of his reign, he laid the foundation stone of the most grandiose building in the city - the Rio Branco Palace. It was in 1929, and a year later the palace was opened although its construction was not completed. It lasted until the beginning of the reign of another politician Guiomard Santos. The grand opening of the completed palace in 1948. It was a perfect example of a combination of two styles - neoclassicism and art deco. From the first days of its construction, a new stage in the history of Rio Branco began - a period of large stone buildings that replaced one-story wooden buildings.
At the end of the 20th century, the palace was not arranged by the new government. So it was abandoned. Gradually, it fell into decline, and its valuables were looted or destroyed. This continued until Jorge Viana was appointed to the post of mayor of Rio Branco. In 1999, a thorough reconstruction of the palace began. It allowed preserving its historical significance for future generations.
Today, the Rio Branco Palace is part of an architectural complex located in the historic city center. The headquarters of the state government of Acre is located there, as well as the historical museum, which is visited annually by thousands of people: residents of Acre, who are increasingly interested in their history, and tourists from other states and even countries. Since the restoration of the palace, more than 300 thousand people have visited it.
