One of the most iconic places in João Pessoa is the São Francisco Cultural Center. Without exaggeration, this is one of the most photographed places in the city. It is not surprising: the cultural complex impresses with its grandeur and beautiful architecture.

So what is included in the São Francisco Cultural Center? There are the São Francisco Church, Santo Antonio Monastery, several chapels, and a fountain. The complex is really large-scale: it is considered the largest Baroque monument in Latin America! All this was erected by the Franciscans in the 16-17th centuries. The entire construction process took as much as 199 years.

The dominant element of the composition is the São Francisco Church, which contains elements of the Rococo style. The building is one of the most important historical and artistic religious monuments in its category. The building has an impressive decor: the walls are covered with Portuguese tiles, which form a panel about the history of Joseph in Egypt; the tower is also decorated with tiles; the facade is decorated with Baroque reliefs. However, the main beauty is hidden inside: the pulpit is a real work of art with many golden elements. UNESCO even recognized this pulpit as the only one of its kind in the world! By the way, inside the church, there is also a crypt with 10 graves.

The Convento de São Francisco has a Moorish-style courtyard. The staircase leading to the second floor is decorated with stone images on the railing. These images represent the influence of the Incas and the Aztecs. The churchyard is surrounded by a tiled wall containing 6 niches with scenes from the Way of the Cross. There is also a monolithic cross with a pedestal, which depicts the figures of pelicans and the mythological bird Phoenix.

Currently, the São Francisco Church is open to visitors. There are trained guides who can tell you the history of the monument in detail. Besides, various cultural events and exhibitions are periodically held there. The cultural complex is open daily. Opening hours: from Monday to Friday-from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday - from 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.
