In the capital of Paraiba, Joao Pessoa, there are mainly natural attractions: beaches, parks, and rocks. In general, this place is truly appreciated by fans of open spaces, unusual landscapes, and fresh air. But if "wild" monuments aren't enough for you, you can look at Benjamin Maranhão Botanical Garden. There, dozens of species of flora and fauna of the region are represented on the landscaped territory.

The Botanical Garden appeared there in 2000. Although this territory has been protected since the 1950s. Its total area is 515 hectares, which makes it the largest natural flat semi-equatorial forest in the world. Moreover, it is surrounded by urban areas. Therefore part of the territory was in danger of extinction: trees were illegally cut down and illegal enterprises were located there. This issue has been currently resolved.

The Botanical Garden has developed three ecological trails for tourists ("to Rio", " to Buriti "and" to Bambuzal"). On the trails, you can see animals and plant species characteristic of the Atlantic Forest.

Organized trips with a professional guide take place daily in the morning and in the afternoon (at 9.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m.). Groups of up to 50 people can take part in the tour. Before the tour, guests listen to lectures about the Botanical Garden and its significance for the city. It is recommended to wear long pants and closed shoes so that the walk is comfortable. Please note that this service is not available on rainy days.

Also, the Jaguaribe River flows through Benjamin Maranhão Botanical Garden and flows into the ocean. Unfortunately, now it has hard times: it crosses 23 blocks in João Pessoa and suffers from city pollution.

Benjamin Maranhão Botanical Garden is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
