The National Museum of the Republic (Museu Nacional da República) is one of the main museums in the country. Therefore, it is located in the capital of Brazil, Brasília. Now this space is used for traveling exhibitions of famous artists, lectures, film screenings, seminars, and other important events. This is a must-see place for anyone who wants to learn more about the life and history of Brazil. It is noteworthy that the idea of organizing a museum appeared in the 1950s. However, the museum was created only at the beginning of the 21st century.
Conceived by Oscar Niemeyer, the National Museum has a hemispherical shape. The dome has a radius of 25 m, the base is 32.6 m, and the height is 26.25 m. Its total area is 15,000 m².
The museum was opened in 2006 from the exhibition of Oscar Niemeyer. It is divided into four floors: the upper floor is intended exclusively for exhibitions; on the first floor, there are two halls for 70 and 85 seats for lectures and seminars. There is also a gallery where small exhibitions are held. Cultural events are organized in the area outside the museum. Besides, the building has a mezzanine that can be visited, and the basement, which is used for domestic needs.
The building is entirely made of concrete. The outer surface of the dome was waterproofed before painting it white. Thanks to this color, the building of the Museu Nacional da República resembles a spaceship.
The museum is part of the Complexo Cultural da República, which also includes the National Library. It was opened in 2008. Now it is also a kind of information center about the culture and history of Brazil. It is critical to note that until 2012, her collection was increased solely by donations. And in 2013, the library received a state subsidy, which helped significantly expand its archive.
