Each state of Brazil has its peculiarities. So, visiting the regional centre, it is worth coming to the local museum of history and ethnography. There is one in Belém, the capital of the state of Pará. It is called Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi.
It was founded in 1866. Initially, it was a classic museum, now, it is also a research centre. The institution aimed to research, catalog, and analyze the biological diversity of the Amazon. The most interesting items became exhibits of the museum, so you can always find something new and unusual in the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi.
The institution is divided into four sections: botany, zoology, earth science, and history.
In 1895, the Botanical Garden with the collection of seeds, fruits, wood, and pollen was opened in the museum. Now, it has more than 200 thousand samples. And all this is brought from the Amazon rainforest! You can see some of the items on exhibition.
The zoological collection of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeld also impresses a lot. It includes about 150 thousand samples of vertebrates preserved in the form of stuffed animals or in alcohol. In addition to the animals, there are skeletons, skins, and eggs. Besides, the museum has more than 1 million samples of invertebrates - arthropods, insects, and mollusks.
The space of Earth Sciences is much more modest. The paleontological collection includes more than 6 thousand samples, while the mineralogical one has more than a thousand items.
The section, dedicated to the long history of the Amazonia, is much more interesting. The museum's specialists made researches in archeology, anthropology, linguistics, and ethnography. The institution has the largest collection of archaeological finds in tropical forests – more than 120 thousand items. The ethnographic part has more than 14 thousand exhibits, including objects of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, Africa, and Peru.
