Temples, Churches
Temples, Churches

Locals say that the Church of San Roque is the most beautiful temple in the city. It is hard to disagree with them. Iglesia de San Roque impresses with its stylish and graceful look.

The Snow White building was erected in 1887. The works lasted more than 40 years. It was difficult because the locals did not know about European technologies. So, every participant was learning new skills.

Right after construction, the cathedral was consecrated and named after San Roque, the patron of Tarija.

San Roque was a pilgrim from France who came to Tarija in the 13th century, according to legends. He was preaching, teaching people to read and write, and curing them. Thanks to his help, the city avoided several mass diseases. That is why the locals were honoring San Roque as a saint protecting the city from tragedies.

Besides, a large celebration is holding in Tarija every year. It is dedicated to the saint. According to legend, sick and leper people were coming to the city of Tarija for help: food, shelter, and treatment in the dry season. It was easy to recognize them by their clothes. They were wearing black cloaks covering their faces. Residents of the city were obliged to help. Afraid of being infected, they were hiding in their houses, but leaving food, clothes, and some money next to their doors. That way, they were honoring San Roque who was paying attention to people’s needs.

Today, nobody walks around the city looking for help. But the tradition has been preserved. And every year, Iglesia de San Roque holds solemn services. In 1998, the holiday of San Roque was considered the historical and cultural heritage of Bolivia.
