There are two famous castles in the city of Tarija: Golden Castle and Azul Castle. These are two architectural treasures loved and cherished by the locals and tourists.

Azul Castle (El Castillo Azul) was built at the very beginning of the 19th century. It belonged to a famous and wealthy citizen, Moses Navajas. He got an idea to build a beautiful house after he saw the completed Golden Castle. Navajas liked it so much that he decided to create no less beautiful and grandiose building.

Local artists, the Kamponovo brothers, were invited as architects. They should build a house in a fashionable art nouveau style and add some features. And the architects did a good job! The elegant blue building and white decorations became a symbol of the city and the triumph of art nouveau in Tarija. 

El Castillo Azul was supposed to be a country house. So, people made beautiful gardens to create an atmosphere of relaxation. Just for these gardens, the owner of the castle was ordering plants from different parts of the world. He wanted to create a unique place.

El Castillo Azul has never been a city property. All the owners of the house have always been influential families. They understand that the castle is the property of Tarija. So, they gladly conduct tours.
