Basilica Menor de San Lorenzo

The main Catholic church of Santa Cruz de la Sierra is Menor de San Lorenzo Basilica. It is located in the very center of the city, on a beautiful square of September 24. It is surrounded by interesting colonial buildings. So, all these constructions create a magnificent architectural ensemble.

The first cathedral was built in 1770. Then, there were centuries of endless reconstructions and changes in the external and internal decoration. Each new city head wished to leave a heritage and change the main cathedral. 

Architects from Spain and France were decorating the cathedral, local engineers were developing only technical projects. Such an approach led to the construction of an eclectic and interesting building.

On both sides of the Menor de San Lorenzo facade, you can see two four-story belfries. Each tower has an ancient mechanical watch showing the exact time since the 19th century. These huge dials are one of Santa Cruz de la Sierra symbols. Several masters need to check the right time. Every day, they climb the tower and look at the ancient mechanisms. Yes, they are not automated yet. This relic is preserved in its original form.

The main feature of the Menor de San Lorenzo Basilica is hidden inside. These are beautiful wooden arches that were not rebuilt. You cannot find another similar system holding the roof of the cathedral in the entire country. They are unique. 

The interior of Menor de San Lorenzo is gorgeous. Though there is no unity, you can notice luxury and grandeur. Pay attention to the altar with ancient sculptures covered with pure silver that is delivered from Bolivia.
