The city of Oruro is small but quite famous among the inhabitants of Bolivia and throughout the country. It became popular not just because of the famous carnival, but also by the Ethnographic Museum of miners (Museo Minero). It is located next to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Socavon.

For several centuries, the inhabitants of Bolivia were building mines to get silver, gold, tin, and other rare metals. Such work was the basis of the country's economy. And miners were respected people because they made a lot to support the state. The mines were always keeping in good condition, so it was not dangerous there after closing.

And one of the mines turned into a museum. The place was not chosen accidentally. It is believed that the Virgin of Socavona is the patroness of miners. She takes care of them and does a lot to return them home safe and sound.

Museo Minero has two parts, aboveground and underground. The upper part shows paintings, statues, and a collection of colorful costumes that locals wear for the most important holiday of the year, Carnival. The underground part includes a large exhibition with photographs, maps, mining equipment, old railway-trucks, and other items used by workers.

A tour lasts for an hour. During it, each guest gets a full impression of the hard work of the miners. Inside, you can feel the lack of air, though tourists come there in small groups and just walk. And the Indians and slaves had to work hard in these conditions to make their living.

The museum is small but colorful. It details the history of mining. You will not regret the time you'll spend here, because you will be impressed.
