A magnificent temple of art, one of the favorite cultural centres of Rosario citizens is the El Circulo Theatre.
The history of this theatre started with the musical accompaniment of major city events and the continued difficult construction in the late 19th century. Some time, the unfinished building of the theatre was abandoned due to the bankruptcy of the construction company. Citizens even called it Cave of Thieves, because that was the meeting place of criminals.
The theatre got lucky in 1903. Emilio Schiffner bought the abandoned construction and continued its building. The original plan of the theatre was changed, and most importantly, much attention was paid to acoustics, which was taken care of by specialists invited from Germany.
The Opera House, as it was then called, pleased its first listeners with the opera "Othello" by Giuseppe Verdi. The theater’s life started on June 4, 1904. It was a remarkable event for both the theatre and its citizens.
The theatre has long been one of the most famous and prestigious stages in Argentina. Some European artists had their first tour performances in this theatre.
A lot of outstanding artists appreciated the magnificent acoustics of the theatre. For example, the legendary Italian tenor Enrico Caruso noted it in 1915 after performances in the "I Pagliacci" and "Manon Lescaut" Operas.
The fate of El Circulo was complicated. In the middle of the 20th century, people even intended to demolish it, but it did not happen. In 2004, the day of the 100th anniversary of the theatre, it was rebuilt. It was a massive reconstruction giving the theatre a new life. Thanks to these efforts, Teatro El Círculo looks completely restored, gorgeous and innovative because of all the technological solutions.
Now El Circulo has regained its deserved glory of a magnificent building and one of the city’s favorite theatres.
