In the Argentine city of Resistencia, there are a lot of museums. Resistencia is usually called the city of sculptures and museums. Yes, there are a lot of sculptures, but let’s talk about museums. A lot of them are thematic. But Museo Historico Regional Ichoalay is the oldest one in the city and the entire province.
The museum was opened in October 1949. It was named after the famous Native American leader Abipon Ichoalay. It was located in the building of the School 87th. And such a location can be easily explained - its founders were teachers. Two professors Ines García de Marqués and Esther Machicote de Díaz were preparing a seminar for schoolchildren. They collected interesting historical artifacts and made a museum.
The collection was growing and enlarging but the museum was located in school for a long time. It was even closed for several times. But thanks to the efforts and care of teachers, the museum was reopening again and again. These people took responsibility for its development.
Now the museum is a well-known cultural space with interesting and informative collections. They attract both residents and curious tourists. The museum exposition consists of four thematic parts. Each of them is dedicated to the indigenous peoples of the province, immigrants, military victories and activities in Resistencia, the culture of the Chaco Province.
The heritage of the Ichoalai Museum is keeping in textiles and ceramics of indigenous cultures. Their origin and age make them especially valuable. Here you can find many authentic items made by the locals. Among them are utensils of various ethnic groups, tableware of the first European immigrants, photographs, letters, books, diplomas, medals, swords, uniforms, etc.
