Monuments, Sculptures

Argentina is proud of its heroes, and it honours their memory. One of such symbols is located in the city of Mendoza, a park named after the national hero of Argentina - General José de San Martín. Monumento al Ejercito de Los Andes is not just a monument dedicated to one hero.

I would call this building a whole complex dedicated to fighters for independence because it is so symbolic and expressive.

The monument combines several sculptural groups united by one ideological plot. And it has a suitable location - the top of Mount Gloria.

This monument appeared owing to the government of the country. It decided to prove the feat of José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras who brought the troops over the Andes and achieved the independence of Rio de la Plata.

In 1911, people chose a location and laid the first stone of the monument. The large pedestal was the base for many sculptures cast in bronze. The monument was opened on February 12, 1914, on the 97th anniversary of La Batalla de Chacabuco.

For more than 100 years, the monument to the Andes Army has been one of the most known monuments of the city and country. The monument has many components. Each of them is a symbol or a sketch of a historical fact.

On a mountain height, a woman raises her arms to the sky. She holds broken chains, a symbol of Freedom. In the sculptural composition, you can see the equestrian statue of General José de San Martín with grenadiers on both sides.

The plots, depicted on three friezes, tell about the most difficult and tragic events of that period and the help of the locals. Here are the heroes of military operations and campaigns, and women donating jewelry. This sculptural composition has symbols of three liberated countries: shields of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. It even has a condor, a symbol of the Andes.
