Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary (Nuestra Seora del Rosario) in the Argentinean city of Corrientes is a great pattern example of art and a historical monument protected by UNESCO. The cathedral was built between 1854 and 1861, but its official sanctification took place after ten years, only in 1872. That time, the church was offered precious canvases, previously keeping in the ancient church of Our Lady. Unfortunately, it had been destroyed by that time. Now, the residence of the governor of the Corrientes Province is located in its place.
The history of Nuestra Seora del Rosario started with the help of the governor, Dr. Juan Gregorio Pujol. He decided to build the cathedral and gave money. The master Nicols del Grosso and his brother Nepomuceno Alegre were its designers. The construction in the Italian style started in 1854. In 1910, Pope Pius X established the diocese of Corrientes, the temple became a cathedral and the main religious building in the entire province.
At different times, various craftsmen were decorating the cathedral. Each of them added something original to its look. Now, it is a harmonious sacred building attracting with its beautiful columns. Nuestra Seora del Rosario has a main and four additional altar. Besides, there are three wide naves. The largest is 58 meters long and almost 8 meters wide. The dome is 23 meters high, while the tower has a height of 34 meters.
A piece of art and a Christian relic, an image of the Deceased Christ, was made in the 18th century in a Jesuit manner by an outstanding Spanish master, Don Julio Pomares. This pattern was brought to Nuestra Seora del Rosario at the beginning of the 20th century.
