The history of Gainey Vineyard is the history of a family business that has become a world-famous brand. It began in 1962 when the father of the family purchased 1,800 acres of undeveloped land stretching across the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley. Most of these territories were occupied by farmland, where fruits, vegetables, flowers were grown, and cattle were kept. The owners of the ranch have long been thinking about producing wine, and once planted 50 acres of land with vines. In 1984, the first small quantities of high-quality wine appeared from the most elite grape varieties, like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Gainey Vineyard grew and developed at a rapid pace. Today, it occupies three extensive ranches located in two of Santa Barbara's most famous and popular appellations: the Santa Ynez Valley and the Sta. Rita Hills.
All generations of the Gainey family are involved in the family business. They invest a lot of accumulated knowledge and experience. One of the features of the winery is the use of sustainable farming methods, long before it became widely used among wine producers. Pesticides that are harmful to the environment and employees are not used here. The control of weeds and insects is carried out manually using organic products, and only natural compost and natural additives are used to maintain soil fertility.
