This place is not like the other canyons of Arizona. Due to the distance from the main tourist routes and the lack of any infrastructure, only the most curious travelers come here. But it's worth it: once they get there, some of them enjoy the silence and spectacular views for several hours.
Horseshoe Bend is a scenic meander of the Colorado River located on the Navajo Sandstone in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area near the city of Page, Arizona. Because of its unusual symmetrical shape, this place is often called Horseshoe Canyon.
To see Horseshoe Bend you will have to leave your transport and take a walk along the sandy slope. Take comfortable clothing and shoes as well as a hat and enough water if you are going to visit the canyon on a sunny day. This place was once part of the largest desert in North America. Over time the soft sands turned into the Navajo Sandstone which today covers an impressive area from Arizona to Wyoming.
After climbing the slope you will enjoy an impressive view of the picturesque cliffs of the Paria Plateau which is a part of the unusual Vermilion Range. Keep going and you will see an even more impressive view of Horseshoe Bend.
In some incomprehensible way, a few million years ago, the Colorado River confidently cut its way through the huge rocks of the Navajo Sandstone and created an amazing landscape that fascinates and delights.
Those who can visit Horseshoe Bend admit that they have two contradictory feelings at once in this place. On the one hand, they feel it is unfair that such a stunning natural attraction is not known to many people even at home, in the United States. On the other hand, they feel happy and satisfied that they do not have to share this place with other curious travelers.
Be sure that Horseshoe Bend is a nice place to visit at any time of the day. However, it seems to be impossible to spend the whole day there: there are no benefits of civilization nearby. The best solution is to return here several times.
