Graceland is the estate, built in 1939 in the colonial style. It was bought by Elvis Presley for living.
The house is located in a suburb of Memphis in the Whitehaven District. Elvis got it in 1957 to live here with his family. The estate occupies 14 acres and cost a large sum - $ 100,000.
When Elvis Presley was young, his family lived in Tupelo, Mississippi. It was very poor. But after Elvis's father was imprisoned for fake checks, life became very difficult. Then, little Elvis came to his mother and said: “Once I become rich – once everything will change and I buy you a beautiful house where we all can live together. And you will never have to work - people will do it for you”.
Buying Graceland, Elvis kept his promise and moved his family to Memphis. He adored to do something ordinary and often spent time by the pool, despite he did not know how to swim.
He liked to change the furniture in the house. He often hired famous designers to change the interior, but there were never any antiquities or ancient styles. Elvis adored only the modern interior. So, the highlight of the house was the pink-black-gold color scheme in the living room. A favorite place in the house was his bedroom. The ceiling was mirrored, the walls were covered with black velvet and leather, the massive doors – with leather, the windows were densely draped. Two TVs hung on the walls, here also was a video surveillance system. It allowed Elvis to see what was happening in the house.
Today, the estate is open to visitors. A guide meets them next to the front door and leads them through all the living rooms and kitchen of the house.
