The small Lake Havasu City in Arizona has an interesting attraction that is considered to be the biggest antique ever sold and purchased at an auction. We are talking about London Bridge which attracts many curious tourists every year. London Bridge is nothing like its more famous and younger brother which still stands in the capital of Great Britain and is its symbol. Yes, do not be surprised and do not be mistaken: London Bridge and Tower Bridge are two completely different structures that were close neighbors in the past. Our hero does not have magnificent towers, suspended passages, and lifting mechanisms. This is a small but cute 280-meter-long bridge that impresses not with its appearance, but with its amazing history. How did it happen that the centuries-old London Bridge was thousands of kilometers away from its homeland? This story began in the last century. Because of the huge number of cars the ancient structure, standing on the River Thames, began to rapidly sink into the water. The London City Council made the unusual decision to sell it by auction, and in 1967 a search for potential buyers began. Robert P. McCulloch, an oil magnate and founder of Lake Havasu City, became interested in London Bridge. The deal took place the following year. McCulloch offered the winning bid in the amount of $2,4 million. Dismantling, transportation, and installation of the structure at the new location cost another $7 million. There is a legend based on those events. They say that at the time of the purchase of London Bridge Robert P. McCulloch was convinced that he was actually acquiring Tower Bridge. However, all parties of the deal denied the rumors. The opening of the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City where it found new life, took place on October 10th, 1971. That event is still considered one of the most extraordinary in the history of this American city. Today there are guided tours for everyone who wants to plunge into the events of the past years of London Bridge which hides many more fascinating stories behind its inconspicuous facade.
