It is difficult to find a single corner in the United States where no war of independence in the past, and where is no monument in honor of the heroes in the present. The state of Texas was no exception. The entire capital of Houston was named after its hero, General Samuel Houston. And although the battle there lasted only 18 minutes, locals will always remember their heroes. In honor of them, they erected the San Jacinto Monument.

An octagonal stele with an area of 15 sq m. at the base and a height of 173 meters was made of reinforced concrete and was installed in 1939. It was a joint project by local architect Alfred C. Finn and engineer Robert J. Cummins. The tallest column in the world is lined with light stone and crowned with a ten-meter Lone Star weighing more than 200 tons. It`s a symbol of the independent spirit of the state of Texas. There was also an engraving describing the entire history of the state on the front side of the stele.

Inside the base of the monument are the San Jacinto Museum and the Jesse H. Jones Theater, opened in 1990. At the top of the monument is an observation platform, which can be reached by an elevator located inside the column. The purpose of the museum was to spread knowledge about the history of Texas, as well as to strengthen friendly relations between the peoples of the state and the countries of Latin America. The museum's bronze entrance doors are decorated with the inscription Six Flags over Texas. Its collection includes historical artifacts from the ancient Mayan and Spanish colonial civilizations, as well as important documents signed in the state. In total, the museum has more than 100 thousand valuable items and about 50 thousand documents. The Jesse H. Jones Theater regularly hosts the screening of the Texas Forever documentary, which tells the story of the Battle of San Jacinto.

Today, the San Jacinto Monument, along with the museum and the theater, is the National Historic Site. It is recognized as the best example of modern architecture in the United States.
