Fans of outdoor activities and tourism will be delighted with Humphreys Peak. It is the highest point in Arizona which is located north of Flagstaff. You can get there by car. The main landmark is the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort where the 8-kilometer hiking trail to the top begins.
Climbing Humphries Peak can be a special and long-awaited adventure not only for tourists, naturalists, and geologists but even for historians. The latter will be interested to know that the mountain was named in 1870 in honor of Andrew Atkinson Humphreys, an American engineer, soldier, and general of the Union Army during the civil war. Everyone else is pleasantly intrigued by the fact that the peak is part of the ancient volcanic mountain range of the San Francisco Peaks which is located in the heart of the Grand Canyon plateau.
Humphreys Peak is more than 3,850 meters high, but travelers can only climb as high as 3,475 meters. The restriction is not accidental: it was introduced to protect and preserve the unique natural environment of this place. Besides, climbing is only allowed for small groups of up to twelve people.
During the ascent to the top of Humphries Peak, you will find a lot of interesting things. You will first step out onto a lovely lawn with seasonal wildflowers and mesmerizing mountain views. Enjoy this moment. Look to the West where Mount Kendrick and Mount Sitgreaves rise. Turn to the East where you will be met by Mount Agassiz. It may seem that this is the highest point in the area, but do not be fooled and continue driving towards Humphries Peak.
After the meadow, the forest begins. It becomes more dense and dense as you climb. Gradually the landscape is changing, and the mighty pines are replacing the thin aspens.
Closer to the top you will find a small obstacle course with large boulders, and then you will witness the stunning view over Arizona where you can even see the Grand Canyon.
