The Colorado State Capitol is considered the main attraction of Denver. The decision to build it was made in 1883 immediately after it was decided that Denver would become the capital of the Colorado State. Then an architectural competition was announced for the design of the Capitol. Quite a lot of people took part in it.

More than 20 projects were developed, and five works were submitted to the final stage of the competition. The winner was determined by popular vote. It was Elijah Myers, a famous American architect who built the capitals for the States of Michigan and Texas. The construction of the Capitol was slow. There were many financial problems. During this time the contractor was replaced and the chief architect was dismissed. The Capitol building was built 8 years after the first brick was laid.

Now the Capitol can be seen from almost anywhere in the city: it is incredibly huge and it is even built on a hill. So you will have to overcome a huge number of steps to get close to it and admire it.
The staircase leading to the Capitol is divided into two parts by a platform on which the "guard" of the Capitol is located: there are two cannons and a monument to a cavalry soldier of the Civil War.

You can only get inside the Capitol through the back door. The main door is almost always locked. You feel like an ant in a building...the ceilings are incredibly high. The scope and size of the Capitol are simply amazing!

The interior of the Capitol is luxurious with bright colors and a large number of decorative elements on the arches of the walls and columns. The lower part of the walls is decorated with pink onyx, which, by the way, was a rather rare stone. Its only reserve was spent on the interior decoration.

On the second floor, there are lots of frescoes, which depict Denver residents who have contributed to the development of the city. You can even get into the chamber of the House of Representatives, where decisions are made. By the way, everyone can attend the meetings. The Senate Conference room is located on the third floor. Everything there is very similar to the second floor, except that the color of the walls is different. On the third floor, there is a special round room with portraits of all the presidents of the United States.
