COSI is a huge and dynamically developing project of Colombian scientists. Its aim is to increase the level of education among the population and attract the attention of young people to scientific research.
COSI opened in 1964 as an enterprise of the Franklin County Historical Society. It was located in the Memorial Hall until 1999. Then it moved to a huge new building, built specifically for COSI. Some of the exhibitions planned by the center could not be implemented due to a lack of money. However, COSI management never gave up. Some projects were announced as fundraising and implemented jointly by citizens.
The entire research center is divided into various thematic zones: ocean, energy research, space, progress, gadgets, life, dinosaurs, features.
One of the most interesting exhibitions is the space one. There is an exact copy of the space station. Also, the John Glenn Friendship 7 spacecraft from Mercury-Atlas 6 is recreated. This part of the research center includes remote-controlled vehicles as well as imitations of the spacecraft landing. The most unusual in this exposition is an imitation of a black hole. Visitors are placed inside it, and the movement of space around them causes disorientation. The feeling is incredible! It`s so breathtaking that for a moment they do not understand where they are and that they are surrounded by people and the walls of the museum, not outer space.
The oceanic part of the center is divided into two zones: one leads to an underground cave, next to which a shipwreck occurred, and the second shows important natural processes related to water. There is also a huge statue of Poseidon with an imitation of waterfalls and fountains.
COSI is a research center where even an experienced adult will walk like a child with his mouth open. They will be amazed, and at the same time will be proud of the scientific achievements of humanity. A pride arises especially when it is discovered that the research center does not have state support. It exists at the expense of funds and the support of its visitors.
