A unique natural park located in the suburbs of Colorado Springs, consisting of many red rocks. This place is ideal for leisurely walks, photoshoots, and picnics in nature. The Gаrdеn оf thе Gоds was opened completely by accident. We should pay tribute to the city authorities, who not only preserved it but also equipped it and made it free to visit.
The garden was opened in 1859 when two local cartographers decided to open a beer garden in the area. They wanted to set up a beer restaurant in nature, where citizens could relax. So they began to study the area and look for the most suitable territory. At some point, two enterprising citizens discovered red rocks spread out over a huge area. They liked this place and decided to call it the Garden of the Gods. By the way, the beer garden did not appear there. Perhaps it was for the best.
Scientists have found that the famous red rocks were formed millions of years ago as a result of earthquakes and stone erosion. The rocks are conglomerates of red, pink, and white sandstone and limestone. These rocks are evidence of past eras: remnants of ancient mountains, traces of seas, dinosaur fossils, and shells have been found there. For example, in 2006 there was discovered a previously unknown species of the dinosaur Theiophytalia, which translates as "belonging to the gods."
Today, the park offers more than 15 hiking trails for visitors and residents of Colorado Springs. The paths lead deep into the rocky mountains, bend around the rocks. You can climb some and enjoy the beautiful view. Or you can stay in the shade and have a picnic.
The garden has a visitor center where free presentations about the local nature are held. You can also organize various tourist trips around the garden: climbing, hiking, bus.
