Listen to the sound of waves, the noise of seagulls, look into the distance, putting your hand to your forehead to protect your eyes from the sun… What could be a better place for relaxation than Pointe aux Canons lighthouse? It is located on the island of Saint-Pierre. The lighthouse is the first sight that travelers meet.
Pointe aux Canons Lighthouse is a symbol and a feature of the island. And there is an explanation of that. It appeared owing to the French at the end of the 17th century as a part of the fort, protecting the city against British attacks. And the lighthouse’s function was to illuminate the battlefield. Unfortunately, the British destroyed the fort, but they did not touch the lighthouse.
The lighthouse always looks romantic but a little sad. It is a light melancholy, mixed with a sense of adventure. Planning a trip to the lighthouse, you get such a mood. The road goes along beautiful coastal cliffs and waves of the Atlantic Ocean. A salty air beats against your face and ruffles your hair, while majestic cliffs rise above houses.
And now, you have to walk just a hundred meters decorated with large red stones. Overcoming it, you approach the lighthouse. The sound of the waves becomes stronger, and splash gets colder ... You come inside, and the rumble subsides. You need just to go higher, open your eyes, and ... enjoy the incredible view of the harbor. The lighthouse is not very high, but such landscapes look gorgeous, especially in the sunset. And when the element is raging, the adrenaline is pumping, romantic mood disappears, and the thirst for adventure captures!
And all this time, locals are peacefully fishing around. It is their favorite place. To the north of the fort there is a series of fishing stations. You can take a fishing rod, tackle, find out where the bite is best and join the locals, glancing at the beautiful lighthouse from time to time.
