The monks of the Dominican order were already on the territory of present-day Mexico in 1526. And in 1534, the vicar of this order arrived in Puebla. He became the first bishop to begin the construction of Catholic churches in the city, including its main shrine - the Church of Santo Domingo. The construction of this temple began by the architect Francisco Becerra in 1571 and was completed in 1611. Today, the impressive religious structure occupies the entire southern part of the main square. Its dome is made in the shape of the crown of Our Lady, in the center of which the symbol of the Holy Spirit is depicted.

The exterior of the church is represented by a mixture of architectural styles such as the Renaissance and Baroque. On the facade of the building is an onyx figure of the founder of the Dominican Order, St. Domingo. Above it is the coat of arms of the order, as well as two dogs with torches in their teeth. They represent the "Dogs of the Lord" and are a symbol of the Dominicans. There is another figure - the Archangel Michael. The temple was built in his honor.

The interior of the church attracts visitors with its dazzling frescoes and luxurious chapels. Its walls were painted by the famous Peruvian artist Marcos Zapata in the 18th century. There are two altars in the front part of the temple. One of them is made of alder, the other - of cedar. They both have silver embossment. The Church of Santo Domingo has a magnificent collection of sacred art from the colonial period.

However, the main attraction of the temple is the small baroque chapel of the rosary. The Mexicans call it the "eighth wonder of the world." Its construction lasted for about forty years and was completed only in 1690. The dome of the chapel is richly decorated with images of saints and dancing cherubs. All the walls are covered with gold leaf. The centerpiece is a magnificent gilded altar with marble columns, as well as an image of Our Lady of the Rosary with the infant Dominic in the very center of this altar.

And finally, the last part of the church ensemble is the bell tower. Its construction began in 1801 but remained unfinished. Inside it, there are bells cast at the end of the 17th century. Their total weight is about six tons.
