Fountains, ponds, waterfalls – now, it is not surprising at all. But only visitors of Monterrey can ride a boat on an artificial river.  You do not like boat trips? Well, you can walk along the embankment of the longest artificial river in Latin America. Its length is 2.5 km, and the depth is only 1.2 m. Every day, people organize amazing tours on motorboats through it.

The construction of the Santa Lucia Canal began in 1996. Unfortunately, it was stopped for more than 10 years because of the country's economic crisis. And its grand opening took place in 2007. The President Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, the Governor of the State José Natividad González Parás and the Mayor of Monterrey Adalberto Arturo Madero Quiroga participated there. That day was also an anniversary of the Mexican War of Independence. So, the quay was a symbolic gift to the inhabitants of the city.

The channel looks like a beautiful "turquoise band" of water in the heart of industrial Monterrey. Along it, you see pedestrian walkways and lawns. At night, the entire quay is illuminated by dozens of bright lights and strictly protected. It connects the central city square Macroplaza with the famous Fundidora Park. Walking through it, you can enjoy landscapes, magnificent fountains, and sculptures. Several bridges cross the channel, suiting the entire architectural ensemble.

Despite the simplicity of the project, it took a lot of forces to finish it. The main problem was the presence of heavy metals in groundwater. They could flow to the canal and destroy it. Fortunately, the chief engineer of the project had such problems earlier and knew how to solve them. He used Krystol concrete waterproofing additive with an internal membrane. As a result, there were not any leaks, and everyone was happy about it.

Today, the quay of Santa Lucia is a nice place with its wonderful views and cozy benches.
