The city of Victoria de Durango was founded by Spanish colonizers in northern Mexico in the 16th century. Owing to the location and important role in the military and trade, a lot of cultural and historical objects were constructed here. Many monuments have been preserved to this day. And now the city is called the “open-air museum”. Victoria de Durango is in second place by the number of shrines.
Francisco de Ibarra founded and named this city in 1563. But its construction, including the central square and the wooden church, was started several years earlier. That time, the Franciscan monk Diego de la Cadena came to these lands with a religious mission. For a long time, a life in the city was calm. But in the 18th century, some precious minerals were found here. So, the new history of Victoria de Durango began.
The historic city center is considered one of the richest cities in Mexico. It includes hundreds of stone buildings with a 400-year history. From Baroque to neo-Gothic, you can learn history of architecture. But the most beautiful building of the city and northern Mexico is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. It is surrounded by beautiful fountains and trees in front of the Plaza de Armas. The cathedral was built in place of the burned down church in 1634.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1695 by the architect Mateo Nuñez. It was completed by 1713. But the official year of the construction is 1844 when workers did all the internal work. The building was made in the Baroque style with two tall towers decorated with clocks. The main entrance to the cathedral is decorated with Corinthian columns and statues of Saints Peter and Paul. But the main feature is its interior decoration. There are Byzantine frescoes of the 20th century, furniture of the 18th century, including gilded choral chairs, and paintings by Mexican artists.
