It happens that you do not notice the individuality of a city. A usual city, nothing interesting. But then, you learn the history and traditions of it step by step.
Chimalhuacan is different. There are no ancient Chichimec pyramids or heritage of Spanish people. But a huge guard protects Chimalchuacan from enemies and evil at the entrance to the city.
“Guerrero Chimalli” is a very strange and controversial, but impressive sculpture. It is a symbol of respecting history. Do not be afraid that you miss it. This handsome man with a shield and a burning hat is seen from afar. The city has no tall buildings, so the 60-meter Aztec warrior can be seen from anywhere in Chimalchuacan. He has a shield in hands – it is one more symbol. “Chimalhuacan” is translated from the language of the ancient peoples as “a place of shields”.
The sculpture for 30 million pesos was made by the famous sculptor Sebastian. The local government gave the sculptor the task – to show the power and strength of the region and create a city symbol. Sebastian coped with the task. Guerrero Chimalli, made in the typical red color, looks impressive.
A graceful Aztec man slender stands on 68 piles going into the ground for 25 meters. To collect all 33 details of the sculpture, put on a hat, give a mace in one hand and a shield in the other, workers were using several cranes of 300 tons. Sebastian outdid himself. Guerrero Chimalli is several meters higher than the Statue of Liberty.
The sculpture of war does not suit the image of the city at all. A large, bright, strong, and powerful warrior contrasts with small and slowly developing Mexico. But it is a city of great potential and ambitions. Guerrero Chimalli shows: Chimalhuacan can achieve a lot.
