Sagrario Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Soledad was built in honor of Madonna Soledad, a grieving mother who lost her beloved son. Mother of God bowed her head from grief and suffering. There are sadness and sorrow in her eyes, and tears never dry on her face. That is why the cathedral has the Name Cathedral of Solitude, Lady. But Mexicans have ambiguities in their culture. So, everything is not so clear about the cathedral. The grieve and sorrow connected with its name do not have so much meaning.
In the central square of Acapulco, the city decided to build a cinema in the 1930s. Yes, there was no mistake. The building was initially constructed for the cinema, but later people decided to take mass there. No one knows how it happened. But citizens liked the cathedral. And it became the main shrine of the Archdiocese of Acapulco.
Today, this religious building is the main sight of the city. Many young couples come here to get married, which is also rather weird because of the cathedral’s name.
The long history of this sacred place is mixed with its beauty and originality. An architect Federico Mariscal designed this snow-white building with colored stained-glass windows. He combined several modern and traditional styles. The modern building with four symmetrical towers looks like a mosque with minarets. But all these towers have the Byzantine features.
The interior is also very beautiful. These are colorful decorations and graceful statues with natural gold and sky-blue paint. The sun illuminates magnificent frescoes through spacious windows. In the center, you can see a glass sarcophagus with a statue of Jesus Christ.
