Are you excited? There is a legend that the small town of Uummannaq with 1250 inhabitants has a great power to fascinate, bewitch, and take hearts. You leave it by yourself when you see beautiful, incredibly large fjords of bluish and white colors. There are also white, sparkling icebergs, a serene sky, and such an interesting Inuit culture.
Inuit people are ancient Eskimo tribes. They inhabited the territory of Greenland in the 15th century. There was found the most famous mummies in the world. In 1972, the researchers excavated eight mummies, six women and two children. All of them were in perfect condition. The found bodies are located in the National Museum of Nuuk.
But the Uummannaq Museum is also very fascinating. Have you ever seen how the Earth looked like hundreds or even millions of years ago? The existing continents have been formed as a result of the plateau movement. This theory belongs to Alfred Wegener, the man who has moved the continents.
You can easily spend a few hours, looking at the exhibits of the Wegener expedition. To be precise, he made two. He had to even use propeller sleigh. The nature of Greenland impressed him so much that he decided to devote his entire life to this country.
Of course, the museum contains a large collection showing the life of the Inuit tribes. The mummies are not there, but you can see copies of their clothes and imagine their appearance. There also are many items and tools used by Inuit every day. These are unusual, funny figures made of local stone.
The guide tells you fantastic stories about the ancient tribes, culture, and a beautiful Uummannaq nature. The museum is very small but so nice.
