Not far from Upernavik there is a hill from which you can see the town, glaciers, fjords, and the largest open-air museum in Greenland.

If you travel all over Greenland, you won`t notice the architectural differences. The same colored houses with a pointed roof are everywhere: in Nuuk, in Upernavik, in the center of the island, and on its outskirts. Despite the weather conditions, the buildings seem to have just been built. Almost all of them are made in the colonial style.

The peculiarity of Upernavik is that most of the houses there are original, not copies. The houses form a kind of museum, which has no specific limits. This is the oldest and northernmost open-air museum in Greenland. It can be viewed from above and from the ground, as well as from inside of each house. Just don't forget to ask the residents for permission. By the way, they can act as guides. Locals respect their culture and can tell a lot of interesting, sometimes fantastic stories.

The old quarter also has an old church, a grocery store, and other original colonial buildings. They are wooden or stone as if growing out of the ground with small windows and a triangular roof. Actually, roofs are probably the hallmark of these places.

When you have walked around and seen enough of the museum from above, you can try your luck inside it. The interior of the main building is quite simple: white walls, large ceiling beams made of dark wood, a lot of space. The guide will tell you interesting facts about certain exhibits. Besides, you will find out which famous researcher was the last to leave his autograph in the museum's magazine.

You will be shown a complete collection of harpoons and other tools that were used by the locals to hunt the whale. Upernavik Museum is worth a visit to get acquainted with the culture of both Upernavik and the whole of Greenland.
