Ilulissat is famous not only for its beautiful fjords. This city is the birthplace of the famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. He was born there in 1879. His house is still there. It now houses the main museum of Ilulissat.
The museum's exposition is interesting for everyone, not only for those who are interested in the research of the North. There you can get acquainted with the peculiarities of Arctic life, find out the details of the numerous expeditions of the famous explorer, see what they managed to find and what new places to discover.
The Ilulissat Museum has three permanent exhibitions: the history of the city, interesting facts about the Arctic expeditions of Knud Rasmussen, legends, and traditions of the village of Sermermiut, the largest settlement near the Icefjord.
The museum is interesting both for its exposition and for the fact that a famous explorer was born there. It is also interesting that this house is one of the oldest buildings in the city that has survived to this day.
This house was built in 1848. It was built not as a residential building, but as the first Seminary in Northern Greenland. Boys came there from all over the country to get an education. In the future, they could travel to the remotest corners of Greenland, read sermons, serve in temples, and support people. However, the house became small for students after a few years. The Seminary changed its location, and the house was made residential.
The young family of the Danish vicar Rasmussen settled there. The boy who became the most famous explorer of the Northern lands was born there a few years later. A curious young man who spent time on the fjords and rescued lost travelers on his dog sleds, could not then imagine that he would make this small city famous all over the world, and his home would become the main Ilulissat Museum.
