The highest mountain, the deepest river, the oldest city, and the largest square — people never stop setting records or admiring them, making history themselves, or becoming a part of it. To become a part of the history of Canada, or rather the largest city of the great northern country, to touch a small spot on the world map, included in the Guinness World Records, doesn’t that sound tempting? Your wish can easily be fulfilled! Take a plane to Toronto and go to the very heart of the city, to the longest street in the world, Young Street.
According to local legend, the modern street, which starts from the scenic Lake Ontario riverfront and goes northward to another beautiful Lake Simcoe and cuts the huge metropolis into two equal parts, once was an Indian trail. Only later it began to be used by everyone who came to the city.
With a length of 1,896 kilometers, Young Street has become not only the longest street in the world but also the most popular tourist attraction in Toronto. It is hard to imagine a tourist in Toronto who would not have captured themself in one of Young Street neighborhoods. Bright, spacious, noisy, and crowded, it stands as the beating pulse of the modern metropolis. Thanks to John Graves Simcoe, a British Army officer who ordered the street to be cleared out in 1793 and named it after Sir George Young, the first carts began to move here in 1816. Young Street became the central street of Toronto. It remains like this to this day, which means it’s time for you to go for a walk along the wide, well-groomed sidewalks to leave your trace in history. Besides, the best bars, restaurants, clubs, and boutiques are located here, beckoning you with their bright signs to come inside.
