Calgary hosted the XV Winter Olympics in 1988. WinSport's Canada Olympic Park was built for this important event, as it is done in many other countries. Now it has become one of the favorite places of recreation for citizens and tourists.
In fact, the history of WinSport's Canada Olympic Park was not easy. The International Olympic Committee has rejected the city's application many times. The Committee considered it insufficiently developed for such a significant event. Each year, new sports facilities were added to Calgary, and funds were invested in infrastructure development. Finally, after seven attempts, the IOC included Calgary in the List of Olympic Games host cities. It was a victory, a reward for work, and persistent movement to the goal.
Previously, the place where today the Olympic Park is located was called the Paskapoo Hill. Residents came there to have fun and sports time, going down from the mountains on skis and sleds.
And in 1988, the Paskapoo Hill became the central venue for the Winter Olympics. There were competitions in bobsled and luge, ski jumping and downhill skiing.
The modern tracks built for the Olympics are still functioning. They are open for professional athletes and various tournaments, as well as for outdoor enthusiasts.
In winter, the Olympic Park is an ideal place for those who are engaged in skiing and snowboarding. In summer, it is also interesting. There are 25 kilometers of bike paths of varying difficulty, sports camps for children and adults. Throughout the year, various festivals are held in the park: not only sports but also art and music.
Besides, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame is located on the territory of the park. It contains exhibits that tell about the bright and memorable Winter Olympics in Calgary.
