The modern world still remembers the Dark Ages of slavery. It is constantly recalling itself.

Unfortunately, Bermuda is not an exception. Slavery also existed in this paradise.

There is Gibbet Island in Smiths Parish. It is one of Bermuda's main sights. The beauty of this island is darkened by a terrible bloody story. It was a place of public slaves’ execution.

Gibbet Island is a very beautiful place. White beaches, clear turquoise water, green trees, and impressive sky. But earlier, there were gallows on these beaches.

In the 17th century, slavery was widespread in Bermuda. Local landowners used free labor everywhere on the island. Unwanted, old, unruly slaves were brought to the island of Gibbet from the entire Bermuda.

Now, it is hard to get to the island. But earlier, all the nobility of Bermuda came here. It is still unclear why this terrible situation could have been a pleasure for someone, but people visited it like a theater.

On the main beach, there was a pillar. The life of several hundred or even thousands of slaves ended there. The magical beaches of Gibbet Island were the last thing that criminals saw.

Now, traveling by train and looking at the gorgeous views of the island, you can see something reminding this pillar… But, in fact, the last traces of terrible events disappeared a long time ago. Anyway, you are getting goosebumps… And a pillar turns to a small building looking like a lighthouse. So, if the island of Gibbet used to take lives, now it protects them.

The history of the island is rather scary, but you need to accept it. People do not forget their past in Bermuda.
